The Green House Project

I hope to do a piece on the Green House Project soon, but I saw this video today and had to share. I truly believe that this is the elder care model of the future, and it’s something we should all be advocating for.

My family was blessed. After two less than stellar years (putting it mildly) with Mom living in a traditional facility, we found what, in my mind, was (and is) elder care Shangri-La. Eason House, is an adult family home to five residents and follows many of the same principles as the Green House homes. Institutional care, even the cream of the crop, simply cannot compete. The ratios just do not permit this kind of individualized care and nurturing. It’s an amazing thing to witness first hand.

Take a look at Move In Day At Tupelo.

New Resource: SeniorAdvisor.com

I’m excited to share news about a new online community just launched by A Place For Mom!!

SeniorAdvisor.com allows families to rate senior care services and communities and submit reviews based on their experience. This information can in turn be used by others who are in search of care.

Looking at care options is beyond overwhelming, and there is often more to a facility than meets the eye. While things may look great during a pre-arranged tour, nothing is more valuable than hearing from folks who have had first hand experience with the facility, staff, and care provided.

The tool will only be as good as the input and reviews received from consumers, so if you have experience, please consider taking a few minutes to write a review. You’ll be helping other families navigate the challenging course that ultimately leads to finding the right care for their loved one.

If you’re on the other side of the equation and are currently looking at care options, SeniorAdvisor.com is a great tool to keep in your back pocket as one of your resources!

Thoughts on Long-Term Care Insurance

sunsetToday on Caregivers, some thoughts on long-term care insurance: Long-Term Care Insurance: This Caregiver is a Believer.

As I mention in the piece, long-term care insurance was never really on my radar. I’d never had a reason to think about it. And then my mom got sick, eventually needing long-term care. Who knew what an costly proposition this could be. We were in for the shock of a lifetime, and let’s face it, care for a loved one is not something you want to skimp on…

LTC insurance really is something that everyone should consider. You can’t give your family a better gift than peace of mind.
