Let’s hear it for … coconut oil!

Ran across another interesting article in Australian Food News concerning the effectiveness of coconut oil in treating the symptoms of ALZ. The article references an Oxford study asserting the notion that coconut oil increases ketones, ultimately improving cognition in some individuals suffering from Alzheimer’s.   While the effects are temporary, it is certainly something worth exploring, particularly for those in the early stages.

If you have any creative ideas on how to incorporate coconut oil into your diet, I’d love to hear them! I use it in cooking, but am in search of other alternatives. I’ve found that mixing it in with oatmeal works both consistency and taste-wise, as does using it as a spread on toast. I’ve also added it to smoothies (though the fact that it hardens when it hits the cold liquid makes this less than optimal).

Other ideas?  Please share in a comment!

The benefits of coconut oil…

In recent months, I’ve been hearing a lot about the health benefits of coconut oil, and specifically its effect on the brain.  I must say, I wrote it off as just another fad, but after watching this video and looking at some other case studies found on the internet, I’m intrigued.

It may be too late for my mom to realize significant results, but I live in fear every single day that my turn is coming.  If there are no harmful effects, I’m certainly not opposed to giving it a try.  In addition to improving brain function, many people have also noted positive changes in LDL/HDL ratios and a decline in triglyceride levels.  Experts even suggest it functions as a natural antibiotic.

For anyone interested in reading more about Dr. Mary Newport, check out her blog or look for her 2011 book, Alzheimer’s Disease: What If There Was a Cure?

Until next time…Carpe diem…
