May: Older Americans Month

Did you know that in 1963, President Kennedy designated the month of May as Senior Citizens Month? Now known as Older Americans Month, it’s a time to honor and celebrate the over 40 million Americans who are 65 years young and beyond.

A few interesting facts, courtesy of the U.S. Census Bureau:

92 million – Projected population of people 65 and older in 2060

The year 2056 – First time (ever) the population 65 and older would outnumber people younger than 18

9.2 million – Estimated number of Americans in age 65 and up (in 2011) who are veterans

81.1% – Percentage of people age 65 and older in 2012 who had completed their high school (or higher) education

44.3% – Of those 65 and older who worked in 2011, 44.3% worked full-time, year-round.

58% – Percentage of Americans age 65 and older who were married in 2012.

80.7% – Percentage of those 65 and older who owned their homes at the end of 2012.

53,364 – The number of Americans 100 years old and older counted at the time of the 2010 Census.

…and last but not least…this one is rather astounding…

20.7 – In 2010, for every 100 centenarian women, there were just 20.7 centenarian men.

Now, go hug a senior and tell them how much you appreciate them!!

Stunning statistics, once again underscoring the fact that we are facing a national crisis, quite likely the health crisis of this century.
