Thank you to our friends at Alzheimers.net for sharing this infographic that so simply, yet powerfully, illustrates the inequitable distribution of research funding. Consider the fact that our government is spending over $200 billion annually on care for Alzheimer’s and related forms of dementia, while the funds allocated for research equate to less than 1% of that number.

Bear in mind also that the recent study published in the Journal of the American Academy of Neurology estimates total annual deaths resulting from Alzheimer’s and other dementias are likely over 500,000, which puts it right behind heart disease and cancer as the 3rd leading cause of death in the United States.

We’ve just learned that Alzheimer’s is much more deadly than we realized. Shocking new data reveals that Alzheimer’s actually rivals cancer as the second most deadly disease in the U.S.

Yet Alzheimer’s research receives relatively little funding – just $550 million annually compared to $5.7 billion annually for cancer research.

Increasing funding for Alzheimer’s research is the only way to find an effective treatment or cure for Alzheimer’s.

Please join me in urging your Senators to double funding for Alzheimer’s research at the NIH in the FY15 budget.

Alzheimer’s champions, Senator Susan Collins and Senator Amy Klobuchar, have introduced a bipartisan resolution that calls on Congress to make stopping Alzheimer’s by 2025 “an urgent national priority.” Continue reading →

Watch this PBS clip as Dr. Bryan James of Rush University Medical Center in Chicago explains the findings of his recent study. These new numbers would move Alzheimer’s up from the sixth leading cause of death to the THIRD leading cause of death in the US, behind only cancer and heart disease. As you listen, keep in mind that ALZ receives ~$550 million in funding per year, while cancer and heart disease combined receive over $10 billion.
