The National Institutes of Health spends over $6 billion a year on cancer research, over $4 billion on heart disease research and over $3 billion on HIV/AIDS research. But it spends only $480 million on Alzheimer’s research. While passage of the recent omnibus bill will add another $100 million, we are still well below where we need to be.
President Obama made broad supportive comments regarding the nation’s priorities in innovation and federally-funded research in his State of the Union address last night, but we are disappointed that he did not take the opportunity to advance America’s internationally-recognized leadership in the global fight against Alzheimer’s.

Thanks for making this easy, Ann. I don’t know why cancer research gets all the money–they’ve made almost no progress, but they still grab all the attention. I think there is more shame associated with Alzheimer’s, but I don’t get it.

Definitely that stigma and shame still associated with Alzheimer’s and dementia; something we need to work toward eliminating sooner than later. Thanks for sharing, Elaine.

Ann thank you for all the information on your blog. It is so helpful to me in many aspects of this journey. Tomorrow I will be heading to
Tallahassee to help my mom’s non-profit Share the Care, a group that provides services to caregivers, to lobby for funding from the state. Thank you for all the resources you provide; they are a huge blessing. Vina
