As you may have heard, a massive spending bill was passed by Congress and signed into law by President Obama last week. The bill includes a $350 million increase for Alzheimer’s research and an additional $85 million for the BRAIN Initiative.
We know we have a long way to go if we’re to meet one of NAPA’s fundamental goals: Prevent and effectively treating Alzheimer’s Disease by 2025. We’ll need to see more increases – for FY ’17 and beyond – but this is a big step in the right direction!
NIH director Francis Collins called the funding bill “the most encouraging budget outcome in 12 years,” adding that the increase “comes at just the right time to take advantage of remarkable opportunities to improve human health, powered by dramatic advances in scientific knowledge and technological innovation.”
Are you curious about how your Senate and House representatives voted? Take a look at the roll calls below. If you’re pleased with their vote, write or call to thank them!
Likewise, contact them if you think they need help understanding the impact of sitting back and doing nothing. Perhaps they aren’t aware of the unprecedented social and economic toll Alzheimer’s will take on our country unless we make significant progress in research – which requires big spending, just like cancer, heart disease, and HIV/AIDS.

Thanks for keeping me informed. I’m not surprised my excellent senators voted yes. I’m more surprised that my representative to Congress voted yes. It may be the first time he and I were on the same side of an issue. A thank you email is in order. I’m sad about how small this is considering the wild ways we spend money in this country, but I’m glad it’s heading things in the right direction.
May you have a peaceful and joyful New Year, Ann. Thanks so much for all you do.
