Friendship: The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly

Let’s face it, everyone has “stuff.” Whether it’s ALZ or some other chronic illness, kid issues, financial hardship, or whatever, we are all dealing with the challenges life throws at us. It’s true; life isn’t always what we bargained for, but if you have a strong support system, you can make it through anything.

This past weekend, I was reminded of how fortunate Jess and I are to have such beautifully caring, supportive friends. Walter Winchell wisely said, “a real friend is one who walks in when the rest of the world walks out,” and it’s so true. It’s easy to be there for someone during the happy times, but not quite as much fun when things aren’t all sunshine and roses.

It’s the people who don’t run when times get tough – those are your true friends. They stand right beside you every step of the way, grounding you, reminding you that you aren’t alone, and helping you see that you’re strong enough to get through anything, but it’s okay to have moments of weakness.

The photos below were taken at Eason House last weekend when my oldest and dearest friend, Debby, came to visit and take video of Rodney’s special song for my mom.  When we were in high school, she practically lived at our house, and my mom thought of her as a second daughter.

One of the most memorable of our escapades was the time Debby got into a spat with her parents, packed up all of her dresser drawers (literally), and moved (with the drawers) into our small apartment! That was just one of our many exploits, and here we are 30 years later, still the best of friends…through thick and thin, the good, the bad, and even the ugly.

Wonderful world, indeed.

We have the most incredible people in our lives… ♥ One of the things that makes me sad is that my mom – such a lover of great music – was never able to enjoy The Conspiracy Band with us. Unfortunately, our Conspiracy family didn’t come into our lives until she was already ill. But today, Rodney came to the house and sang one of my mom’s favorite songs to her – Wonderful World.

It was amazing and very bittersweet. I know that the woman who adores music and loves to dance is still there, deep down inside, and that she enjoyed today immensely. But, for anyone who knew my mom, watching this was also heartbreaking…  Tears of joy and tears of sadness were shed, and ultimately I’ll truly treasure this memory forever.

Rodney, Sherrie, Erin, and Michael – Please know how grateful we are to have you in our lives. Your hearts are huge beyond measure, and you gave my mom such moments of joy today, while giving us a beautiful memory we’ll always hold close. Rodney… I’m pretty sure you have a new #1 fan. ♥

Ridin’ in Style

This past Wednesday, Mom had an appointment with her neurologist. Susie offered to go along, which is always extremely helpful. Since she spends the most amount of time with Mom, I really appreciate having her there to answer the multitude of questions he asks regarding moods, behaviors, et cetera. Not only did she go, but she drove her convertible so that we could ride in style.

Seeing my mom SO happy on that trip to the doc was absolutely priceless. She laughed and laughed, pointed at this and that along the way, jabbered emphatically, and waved her arms, all the while her hair blowing wildly in the wind!

I got a few fantastic pictures that will continue to make me smile for years to come… Here are the highlights.

The appointment itself went very well.  She was having another wonderful day, and never stopped laughing and joking the entire time we were there. Seems the most recent med changes are yielding definite improvements, so we’ll remain status quo for now. He was concerned that her blood pressure readings were unusually low and wants to keep an eye on that, which might ultimately mean a change to the blood pressure meds.

For now, though, we’re just enjoying the good days.

… Until next time… carpe diem…
