sunshineLast week was a busy one.. the heat has hit Central Ohio full force and we have been sweltering! It took awhile, but it appears as though summer is here.

Monday (July 15) marked 7 months since my dear mom went to Heaven and I’ve been thinking about her so much. On Thursday, driving home from work, I had one of those moments where for a split second it didn’t seem possible that she’s really gone. Those tend to be followed by what feels like a very hard punch in the stomach… I wonder if that will go on forever…

One of the ladies at Eason House passed away suddenly last week. She was 93, but you would have never guessed it from looking at her! I always told her what beautiful skin she had and she would just beam and say, “I’m 90 years old, you know…” She will be missed, but it makes my heart smile to think of her now reunited with her beloved husband. I imagine Dr. E. was waiting at Heaven’s gates and greeted his wife with open arms…

Hospital Wristband Project

Monday’s Caregivers post was on Gary LeBlanc’s Alzheimer’s/Dementia Hospital Wristband Project. Gary is doing extraordinary work in Florida and provided an update toward the end of the week. Seems as though the pilot is a go for September 3rd and things are falling into place (with a ton of hard work, no doubt).

It is official. We have a starting date. Starting September 3rd, all dementia patients will have the Purple Angel Logo attached to their wristbands at Brooksville Regional Hospital. Training for all hospital staff in Dementia Care will be held in 8 sessions, 4 mornings and 4 evenings in order to cover all hospital personal staring around Aug. 18th. (Still fine tuning the training dates.) The training will be done by the Alzheimer’s Association Gulf Coast Chapter.

Keep up the fantastic work, Gary!

Life After Caregiving

Elaine Mansfield and Martha Stettinius were kind enough to allow me to interview them for Thursday’s Caregivers piece. I had been reflecting on how the past 9 years truly changed who I am and wanted to write about it. Having been caregivers themselves, Elaine and Martha provided insightful thoughts, discussing how their own journeys resulted in personal transformation.

Angel’s Perch

I did a post about the recently released movie Angel’s Perch on Alzheimers.net this week. This indie film sets aside the statistics we so commonly hear in favor of putting a face on the disease. Featuring the stunning backdrop and history of lovely Cass, West Virginia, it promises to have something for everyone.

I’m still hard at work promoting a Columbus screening, which is scheduled for 8/14 at the Easton AMC 30. The catch? We’re required to have 75 seats reserved for purchase by 8/7. We’re almost halfway there with about two weeks left to go. If you’re in the area and would like to join us for this special evening, please reserve your tickets today!

Until next time, here’s wishing everyone a peaceful week. Keep cool and carry on!

Alzheimer’s Film set in Appalachia to Screen Nationwide Using Groundbreaking Digital Service

Columbus, OH – July – Scrappy Cat Productions announces the theatrical release of Angel’s Perch, an independent feature film produced in partnership with the West Virginia Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association and being distributed via Tugg.com, a brand new digital service that allows audiences to bring independent films to their local multiplexes.  APgenericAngel’s Perch, set to play at AMC Easton Town Center 30 on August 14 at 7:30pm, examines the delicate relationship between past and present, memory and loss as depicted by a family struggling with Alzheimer’s disease.

The inspiration for Angel’s Perch came from the writer’s own roots in West Virginia and his family’s experiences with Alzheimer’s disease. “Everyone has an emotional home – the place that defines your happiest memories. For me, that place is a small town in the mountains of West Virginia,” says J.T. Arbogast. “In 2004, my grandmother was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease, and over the next few years I watched as she slowly lost her memories.  It’s a story that is not dissimilar from the millions of people who have watched this disease slowly take away a loved one and felt powerless to stop it. We struggle to find an answer to the question, ‘What can I do?’  For us, the answer came in the form of making a film.”

Community involvement is the cornerstone of modern independent filmmaking, and with good reason—artists are discovering that their fans are just as interested in the process as the product.  “This whole project began with a Kickstarter fundraising campaign in 2011.  We believed we had something that people would want to see…want to be a part of,” says Arbogast.  Building upon their crowdfunding success, the filmmakers took to a new method of screening the film too: Theatrical-On-Demand.  “Audiences let us know they want to see the film, and we can bring it to them—something that was not possible before movies switched to the digital format.  It’s an incredibly empowering development for audiences and filmmakers,” says Dilts.

Large theatre chains often will not program independent films, fearing that the majority of the seats will remain unfilled. And most independent films lack the funds, clout, and star-power to market a project widely enough to fill those seats.  This means that most independent films never reach their target audiences, and most audiences only get to see large blockbusters in their local theater.  But, with Tugg, Angel’s Perch is planning a 30-city screening tour.  “We are so excited to finally be able to share this film with friends, family, supporters, and a community and audience that we know will embrace it,” Arbogast says. ”Some folks have been waiting two years to see the movie they helped to make…we hope they’ll be as proud of it as we are.”

“It’s hard to find someone who has not been touched by this disease in some way.  While statistics can inform our audience, film has the power to inspire, and we believe our film will raise awareness, bring comfort to families struggling with this disease, and transport the audience to a place of real beauty and warmth,” says Arbogast.

Angel’s Perch is the story of Jack, a successful young architect living in Pittsburgh, who must make the trip to his tiny hometown of Cass, WV to move his grandmother into an assisted-care facility after she is found wandering outside her home. But what was intended to be a two day, under-the-radar trip becomes more complicated when Jack is unable to move her into an assisted living facility nearby.  Torn between the career opportunity of a lifetime, caring for his last living relative and running from his own painful memories, Jack is forced to choose between standing still or facing the pain of his past, so that he can finally move forward in his life.

The film stars Joyce Van Patten (The Danny Kaye Show, The Bad News Bears, The Good Guys, Grown Ups), J.T. Arbogast (30 Rock, When in Rome), Ally Walker (Sons of Anarchy, The Profiler, The Protector), Ashley Jones (True Blood, The Bold and the Beautiful), Ellen Crawford (ER, The Man from Earth), and a supporting cast of talented local West Virginia actors.

The ONE NIGHT ONLY screening will take place Wednesday, August 14th at 7:30PM. Tickets are available online at http://www.angelsperch.com/tickets/ and must be reserved in advance.

week-in-review

I’m always puzzled as to how a week can drag on forever and fly by at the same time. It was one of those weeks for me and I’m mentally exhausted.

Angel’s Perch

Obviously, the best news of the week is that the Columbus screening of Angel’s Perch is now SET for Aug 14 at AMC Easton… with one caveat – we must sell 75 tickets by Aug 7 or the event will be canceled. Please help us make this happen; plan to come out and see this film that’s getting great reviews! This Week on Caregivers

Did you know July is National Sandwich Generation Month? There’s no question the number of people raising children while simultaneously caring for aging parents is on the increase. Monday on Caregivers, I did a piece entitled 9 Sanity Saving Resources for Sandwich Generation Month sharing some wonderful websites and books that might make the journey a little easier.

On Wednesday, I looked at four different products aimed at helping your loved one maintain a bit of independence. They may rely on you for more and more each day, but each little task they can do for themselves gives them a sense of purpose and satisfaction. 4 Products to Help With Maintaining Independence introduces a fantastic med box, complete with talking reminders, an easy-to-operate television remote control, a phone designed for the elderly and memory impaired, and a clock/calendar that won’t leave them asking “Is it dinnertime yet?” every hour on the hour. (((smile)))

A Great Book to Help Kids Understand ALZ

Finally, this week’s Alzheimer.net post is a review of Max Wallack’s fantastic new children’s book, Why Did Grandma Put Her Underwear in the Refrigerator?  Beautifully written and drawing on Max’s personal experience growing up with his beloved great grandmother who had ALZ, it’s a book we can all benefit from. Grab your copy today – I highly recommend it!
