Alzheimer’s: Last Minute Tips for Thanksgiving

With Thanksgiving just a few days away, I wanted to leave you with my thoughts on making the holiday the best it can be for your loved one living with Alzheimer’s or another form of dementia – and for YOU.

Only you know what’s best for your unique situation, so first and foremost listen to your heart. Remember that while things will never be what they once were, it is still possible to find blessings and create moments of joy. If your loved one is still in a place where a gathering is feasible, here are some tips to help.

  • Set realistic expectations right from the get-go. When planning, consider where your loved one is in the progression of the disease and prepare accordingly.

  • Let go of the need for everything to be perfect. You are not Martha Stewart and no one expects you to be. If you need help, ask.
  • If you are hosting, set aside some quiet one-on-one time to spend with your loved one before guests arrive. During this time, shut out all distractions and focus on your time together.
  • During a larger gathering, keep noise to a minimum. Speak clearly in a calm, soothing tone.
  • If your loved one is still able to help with simple tasks, by all means, let them! This gives them a sense of purpose and pride.
  • Minimize distractions, and remember that if you are tense, your loved one will pick up on that feeling.
  • Create a quiet, comfortable area where one or two people at a time can visit.
  • Watch for signs of overstimulation in your loved one and recognize it may be time for a quiet break. Soft music may help with relaxation.
  • Keep some old photographs handy as a conversation starter and for reminiscing. Avoid questions like, “Do you remember?” Instead, talk about the photographs and follow their lead.
  • Realize that sometimes just sitting and holding their hand or rubbing their back makes for the perfect visit.
  • Don’t argue or correct. Remember the best visits involve you entering their world, rather then expecting them to come to yours. This is a key to every positive interaction!
  • Know that the emotions stirred by your visit will last long after the memory of your time together has faded. Let them feel your love.

If you are having visitors who don’t see your loved one on a regular basis, prepare them ahead of time so they know what to expect. You might even consider sharing this list with them in advance of the gathering.

World Alzheimer’s Day: How Can You Make a Difference?

According to the World Alzheimer Report 2015: The Global Impact of Dementia, published by Alzheimer’s Disease International (ADI), there are 46 million people living with dementia globally. Without a medical breakthrough, that number will rise to 131.5 million by 2050. Worldwide, in 2015 alone, there will be 9.9 million new cases of dementia; that’s a new case every THREE seconds.

World Alzheimer’s Day is September 21, 2015, and it’s a great time to pause and think about what you can do to make a difference. You don’t have to be a brilliant scientist or a millionaire to make a significant impact.

Here are a few ideas to consider. If you have others, please share them by posting a comment below!

Take Care of a Caregiver

  • Deliver lunch, dinner, or a plate of homemade cookies. Send a restaurant gift card, or put together a group of folks willing to take turns cooking a couple of meals each week.
  • Mow the lawn, rake leaves, or offer to help with another household task.
  • Put together a spa basket! Think bath salts, lotion, candles, lavender essential oil, comfy slippers, et cetera.
  • Offer to hold down the fort for a couple of hours to give a caregiver a much-needed break. Perhaps they’d like to go shopping, see a movie, read a book, or just relax!
  • Simply send a card to say you care and offer your support.

Volunteer Your Time and Talent

  • Spend time visiting with memory care residents.
  • Volunteer at an Alzheimer’s Association event, join a committee, help with a special project, or offer to make phone calls.
  • Form a volunteer group to make fidget quilts or comfy blankets for people living with Alzheimer’s.
  • Volunteer to provide respite care during a caregiver support group meeting.
  • Become a support group leader.

Donate or Fundraise

  • Make a monetary donation to your favorite Alzheimer’s organization.
  • Sign up for Walk to End Alzheimer’s or The Longest Day and set a fundraising goal.
  • Donate puzzles, picture books, dolls, art supplies, or CDs to a nearby memory care unit or adult day care.
  • Sign up for AmazonSmile and designate your favorite Alzheimer’s organization as your charity.

Be an Advocate

  • Write or call your representatives in Washington and ask for their support on Alzheimer’s issues.
  • Commit to sharing an Alzheimer’s-related fact or statistic with three friends.
  • Use social media to help raise awareness.
  • Join the Alzheimer’s Prevention Registry!
  • Sign a petition.
  • Share your story!
  • Check out the Action Center at UsAgainstAlzheimer’s for more ideas!

Focus on Prevention

  • Commit to walking for 30 minutes at least 3x per week.
  • Each day, replace one unhealthy item in your diet with a healthier choice.
  • Make a monthly date to get together with friends!
  • Take the stairs instead of the elevator.

As Margaret Mead said, “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed, citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.”

I’ve been told plenty of times that I’m wasting my energy. After all, I’m just one person can’t change the world My response to that is simple. I may not be able to change the world, but I can certainly make a positive difference – and you can too!

Here’s to World Alzheimer’s Day. May it be more than just another Monday – let’s all do a little something to further the #ENDALZ movement!

The Zen of Grown Up Coloring

colorAs much as the world has come to depend on technology, I sometimes find myself wondering if it’s a blessing or a curse. The benefits gained as a result of computers, smartphones, and tablets are irrefutable; however, these things have also ushered in the era of being connected 24x7x365. Multitasking has practically become an Olympic sport, as it’s done to an increasingly absurd degree.
 

Looking For a Reprieve?

Whether you’re a full-time caregiver or someone who has a full-time career and oversees the care of a loved one, you know what it feels like to be overwhelmed and on the verge of burnout. You yearn for simpler times and wish you could just turn it all off (both figuratively and literally) for a few hours!

My caregiving days are over, but with a full-time-and-then-some career as well as writing, advocacy, and volunteer pursuits on the side, and the usual life/home maintenance activities, things can get dicey. Like most of the rest of the world, I struggle with priorities and balance some days more than others.

Stress has a significant bearing on our overall health and wellness, and caregivers know this better than anyone. So with life moving at such a fast pace, how do we find time for respite when a month in Hawaii or even just a quiet week at home isn’t in the cards?

When all else fails, grab a coloring book!

secretNext time you feel your priorities are askew, your perspective is out of whack, or your brain is just craving a time out, pick up a coloring book!

As unlikely as it sounds, Scottish artist Johanna Basford has sold over 1.4 million copies of her first adult coloring book, Secret Garden. The follow up, Enchanted Forest, appears to be following suit; both books are sold out on Amazon and BN.com!

In this article by Katelyn Murphy, Basford explains that she simply set out to create a coloring book she would enjoy. Noting the carefree nature of children, she wondered if an activity as simple as coloring might bring calm to an otherwise chaotic adult world. To her surprise, thousands of others desperate for a bit of relaxation sans smartphone or other electronic devices decided she was onto something.

Sound interesting? Just Google “Adult Coloring” or do a search on Pinterest and prepare to be amazed! This stress-busting diversion is a piece of cake to get into, requiring very little time and just a few inexpensive materials. Here is a great list of 16 Colouring Books Perfect for Grown-ups, courtesy of BuzzFeed.

My First Grown Up Coloring Experience

In the interest of, ahem, science, I decided I should check this out for myself so I stopped at Barnes & Noble over the weekend and picked up my first “grown up” coloring book. With a dozen or so options to choose from, I selected Peace & Love by Thaneeya McArdle and settled on a set of 12 Rikota Brush Markers (which, by the way, I love!).

IMG_1302The book begins with a few basics on coloring mediums, an explanation of the color wheel, and some beautiful examples of bright designs in rich, vivid, “feel good” tones. Just flipping through the pages had me eager to let my inner artist run wild and sure enough after about an hour I decided that perhaps I’ve been looking for Zen in all the wrong places.

I really enjoyed this time, and focusing on the detailed pattern cleared my mind of its usual pandemonium (no small feat). There’s something about the act of coloring that really is Zen-like, and I think that feeling, combined with the overall sense of joy found in creative pursuits, makes this a great temporary escape from reality.

So to all of my co-workers: should you come by my office tomorrow and find me coloring – worry not! It’s just a few minutes of calm in the midst of a typical frenetic workday, and if you’re extra nice, I might even let you use my markers!
